2026 NATIONAL ASTRONOMY WEEK (NAW) in Davao City
The recently concluded 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝘼𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙢𝙮 𝙒𝙚𝙚𝙠 in Davao City was a meaningful two-day celebration of astronomy marked by immersive learning experiences and remarkable resilience in the face of challenging weather conditions.
The first day opened with a comprehensive Basic Astronomy Workshop designed to strengthen foundational knowledge and understanding the universe. Participants engaged in lectures on 𝑆𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑠 𝑇ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑛 𝐴𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑦, 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠, 𝐿𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑃𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐷𝑎𝑟𝑘 𝑆𝑘𝑦 𝐴𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠, 𝐵𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑐 𝐴𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑜𝑝ℎ𝑜𝑡𝑜𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑝ℎ𝑦, 𝑃ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑝𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑐 𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑒𝑠. These were complemented by interactive workshops and activities on 𝑀𝑜𝑜𝑛 𝑃ℎ𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑠, 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑃ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑝𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑟 𝑀𝑎𝑝, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 “𝐿𝑒𝑡’𝑠 𝐿𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑈𝑝 𝑎 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛” 𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑡𝑦, 𝑎𝑠 𝑤𝑒𝑙𝑙 𝑎𝑠 𝑎𝑛 𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑃𝐴𝐺𝐴𝑆𝐴 𝐴𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑦 𝐹𝑙𝑖𝑝𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑡. Throughout the entire day, free planetarium shows were continuously offered, providing immersive simulations of celestial objects and astronomical phenomena that enriched the overall learning experience.
On the second day, a class suspension was declared by the local government due to the shear line, prioritizing the safety of students and the community amid inclement weather. The announcement posed logistical challenges and uncertainty for participating schools. Despite this, four committed schools, with the full support of their administrators, teachers, and parents, ensured that their students could still take part in the scheduled competitions.
The day proceeded with a series of engaging academic and creative contests, including the 𝑶𝒏-𝒕𝒉𝒆-𝑺𝒑𝒐𝒕 𝑷𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑴𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒔𝒕, 𝑪𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑵𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒈𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒆, 𝑪𝒐𝒔𝒎𝒊𝒄 𝑮𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒓𝒚, 𝑸𝒖𝒊𝒛-𝑴𝒊𝒄 (𝑨𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒚 𝑸𝒖𝒊𝒛), 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒔𝒎𝒊𝒄 𝑪𝒓𝒆𝒘 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒆. The determination shown by the participating schools underscored a shared commitment to science education and the value placed on opportunities that cultivate curiosity and critical thinking.
We also extend special appreciation to the volleyball team of Davao City National High School, who stepped in and participated as a temporary delegation while awaiting the arrival of official student participants. Their willingness to support the program exemplifies school spirit and adaptability.
Our sincere gratitude goes to 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗼 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 for its invaluable support, and to 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗼 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 for graciously hosting this year’s celebration.
National Astronomy Week in Davao City once again demonstrated that while weather systems may disrupt plans, they cannot dampen the passion for exploring and understanding the cosmos. Our appreciation goes to all students, teachers, parents, volunteers, and partner institutions who made this celebration both impactful and inspiring.
