DOST-PAGASA inaugurates today its newly constructed synoptic weather station in the Province of Bulacan, situated in Purok 2, Barangay Palapala, San Ildefonso, Bulacan. This weather station is among the recently-established stations of the agency and currently the sole operational synoptic station of PAGASA established in Bulacan, which will serve as the direct source of weather information for its stakeholders especially in this province. The San Ildefonso weather station is equipped with state-of-the-art observational instruments including a digital barometer for the measurement of atmospheric pressure, aerovane and anemometer for wind direction and speed, rain gauges as well as several thermometers for dry bulb temperature, wet bulb temperature that are useful for the determination of relative humidity, heat index and minimum temperature. Solar radiation sensors are also installed in the station for the measurement of bright sunshine duration and the total or global irradiance coming from the sun’s disk. All measurements are taken following the standard protocol and practices set by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on weather observation. The station is run by on-duty weather observers and technical personnel round the clock, year-round.
As part of the agency’s modernization program with the provision of budget from the Philippine Government for the establishment of additional ten (10) synoptic stations in several strategic locations throughout the country, this new weather station further strengthens the capacity of DOST-PAGASA on its mandate on the provision of accurate and timely weather information. The establishment of the said station will allow greater protection of local communities against various hydrometeorological hazards by strengthening end-to-end local early warning services, thereby enhancing local capacity for disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM). With this, in order to have direct access to real-time weather information, the locals and the public can now gather or source out weather information anytime and more so during inclement weather.
The PAGASA – San Ildefonso Synoptic Station was made possible through the concerted efforts and collaborations between PAGASA and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of San Ildefonso, Bulacan, by virtue of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the two parties in July 2020, to foster public services and underpin local developments achieved through the realm of science, technology, and innovation. DRRM practitioners, researchers, students, and other interested parties are expected to benefit from this newly-opened field office of PAGASA, and its on-duty personnel are very much willing to assist the visitors. Aside from weather observation, the office can also be arranged to conduct brief discussions on various topics such as meteorology and atmospheric sciences, as well as astronomy.
