SatREx: A Tool for Monitoring Extreme Rainfall

24 March 2023

PRESS RELEASE

Quezon City, 23 March 2023

Extreme rainfall-related disasters can be mitigated if there is a way to identify the event at any given time. Timely to the country’s celebration of National Meteorological Day, the DOST-PAGASA launches SatREx or Satellite Rainfall Extremes Monitor, the innovation is a web-based platform containing near-real-time information on extreme rainfall events. Determining whether extreme rainfall is occurring at any given time and location is of utmost importance for mitigating disasters in highly vulnerable countries like the Philippines.

SatREx provides satellite rainfall estimates, which were derived from the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) provided by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), observed in the past few hours and days at a particular location anywhere in the country. Multiple interactive maps allow users to determine how much rainfall is received over an area, with color-coded shadings indicating potential flood occurrence. Researchers, disaster risk reduction managers and decision-makers, stakeholders, and the general public can now access the platform through the DOST-PAGASA’s official website.

For more information, you may contact Dr. Marcelino Q. Villafuerte II, Chief of Impact Assessment and Applications Section of the Climatology and Agrometeorology Division at (02) 8284-0800 local 4910 or through email iaascad17@gmail.com.
