DOST-PAGASA LAUNCHES THE CMIP6-BASED CLIMATE CHANGE PROJECTIONS IN THE PHILIPPINES
In the pursuit of excellence in public service and with DOST-PAGASA’s commitment in fulfilling its mandates, the CMIP6-Based Climate Change Projections in the Philippines, an updated high-resolution and localized version of climate projections based on the Shared Socio-economic Pathway (SSP) scenarios, is released. This updated version of climate projections provides information that is pertinent for long-term planning and decision-making relevant to disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation among others.
A significant increase in the annual mean temperature is observed across the Philippines. In the recent past 30 years (1991-2020), the country-averaged annual mean temperature has risen by about 0.6°C. Future projections indicate a warmer climate by the end of the 21st century, with potential temperature increases of up to 4.4°C under the SSP5-8.5 (fossil-fueled development pathway) by the end of the 21st-century relative to the baseline period of 1981-2010.
There have also been observed changes in rainfall over the past decades, showing significant increases in annual rainfall in certain areas of Luzon and Visayas, while Mindanao generally experiences a decreasing trend. Multi-model and multi-scenario projections suggest changes in monthly rainfall, with notable increases in rainfall during June and July while decreases in March and May.
An accompanying online platform featuring an interactive map, CliMap V2.0, is also provided for ease of access allowing users to download the historical climate data and climate change projections at a localized city/municipality level across the entire Philippines. It can be accessed through the DOST-PAGASA website.
This information is aimed at supporting local and national government officials and institutions, who are the key actors concerned about the impacts of climate change on our country and its people. It is also intended to support policymakers in developing effective and equitable climate policies to address climate change and improve our country’s resilience through the planning and implementation of adaptation and mitigation programs delivering key climate actions.
