DOST-PAGASA inaugurates today its newly-constructed planetarium in Mindanao, situated at the PAGASA Station in Barangay Molugan, El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental.
The facility serves as the first-ever planetarium in Mindanao, offering an unparalleled experience of the cosmos. Featuring state-of-the-art visualization and immersive multi-media technology, it will treat visitors with captivating journeys through the universe, from distant galaxies to the constellation of stars. Highlighting the theater-type facility and dome for astronomical shows, the planetarium also houses recently acquired telescopes for stargazing activities.
Through interactive exhibits and educational programs, the planetarium will foster curiosity and cultivate a culture of scientific inquiry, contributing to the region's socio-economic development and celebrating Mindanao's scientific heritage. More than just a venue for astronomical amazement, it will also serve as a dynamic center for research, education, and outreach, aiming to inspire a new generation of astronomers and space science enthusiasts.
In his message, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, Jr. said that the construction of the planetarium marks a significant achievement in science education and infrastructure development in Mindanao. “We hope that the establishment of the Mindanao Planetarium is just a kick-off of many more science-centered facilities here in Region X because we, in DOST commit to you as OneDOST4U, to provide solutions and open opportunities to the people of Misamis Oriental through Science, Technology, and Innovation.”
The Mindanao Planetarium essentially symbolizes the region's commitment to exploration and knowledge, promising to remain a source of inspiration and discovery for years to come.
DOST-PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando also expressed his gratitude to the local government units for their support and lauded the efforts of the DOST and PAGASA Mindanao regional office. “The stars finally aligned today as we turn this much-awaited dream into a reality… Even if the project faced technical and logistical challenges specifically during the COVID-19 pandemic, you all continued to fulfill the completion of the planetarium”, Servando said.
Starting May 20, 2024, the planetarium will be accepting requests for lectures and shows on a first-come, first-served basis.
